April 18, 2017 – Vancouver, BC – The Vancouver Spirit Run, is pleased to announce the recipients of The Frank Reynolds Bursary – Madelyn Huston of Maple Ridge, BC and Thomas Nobbs of Vancouver, BC.
This award is administered by the Board of Directors of the Vancouver Spirit Run and financed from the proceeds of the Vancouver Spirit Run and support from our sponsors. Eligible applicants must be residents of BC and be matriculating students progressing to post-secondary study. The $500.00 Bursaries are awarded to individual(s) who have: demonstrated exceptional ability and show considerable promise in Track and Field, Road Running, or Cross Country Running, demonstrate financial need, have attained an acceptable academic record, and have demonstrated qualities of character, leadership, and volunteering.

The Spirit Run, year after year, continues to offer a wonderful experience for athletes, young and old, to participate in the sport of cross country on a world class cross country course”, said Chris Winter, President of the Vancouver Spirit Run organizing committee. “I would also like to thank our selection committee for nominating such exceptional recipients again this year, and we wish both Madelyn and Thomas continued success in their athletic pursuits and post-secondary education”.
2017 – RECIPIENTS OF THE FRANK REYNOLDS BURSARY
Madelyn Huston – A highly motivated and enthusiastic grade 12 student currently attending Thomas Haney Secondary School, Madelyn participates in a variety of sports in addition to track and field and cross country, including hockey, soccer, basketball, and volleyball. Madelyn excels in the 800m and won the BC Championships in 2016 in that event. Madelyn has accepted an offer to attend the University of British Columbia where she hopes to pursue a degree in Classical Studies.
Thomas Nobbs – A grade 12 athlete from Point Grey Secondary School in Vancouver, B.C., Thomas is a multi-time National Champion in the middle distance events, specializing in the 3000m and 2000m Steeplechase. Thomas comes from a family of runners and has been involved in the sport, as a runner, volunteer & coach, almost all of his life. Thomas has accepted a scholarship to attend the University of Washington in Seattle, where he plans to pursue a degree in Biology.

The 2017 Vancouver Spirit Run is set for September 24th, 2017 at Jericho Beach Park. The Vancouver Spirit Run, part of the Vancouver Sun Run Series, is a Cross Country and Trail running event featuring something for everyone at Jericho Beach Park. It is the realization of the late coach Frank Reynolds’ vision to have a mass participation cross country event while encouraging and supporting British Columbia High School and University athletes through charitable donations and scholarship programs.
