Frank Reynolds Bursary Winner Announced

2 Recipients to Each Receive $500

August 8, 2014 – Vancouver, BC – The Whistler Spirit Run, presented by Rio Tinto Alcan, is pleased to announce the recipients of The Frank Reynolds Bursary – Lauren Doak of Whistler, BC and Lauren Fraser of Vancouver, BC.

This award is administered by the Board of Directors of the Whistler Spirit Run and financed from the proceeds of the Whistler Spirit Run and support from our sponsors. Eligible applicants must be residents of BC and be matriculating students progressing to post-secondary study.  The Bursaries are awarded to individual(s) who have: demonstrated exceptional ability and show considerable promise in Track and Field, Road or Cross Country Running (Athletics): demonstrate financial need: have attained an acceptable academic record: and have demonstrated qualities of character, leadership and volunteering.

One of the founding sponsors for The Whistler Spirit Run is ASICS. Last fall, Yves Simard, the Vice President of Sales & Marketing for ASICS Canada had the opportunity to run the event and had an exceptional performance and placed 3rd in the Men’s 8km race. Yves graciously donated his prize money and with support from ASICS turned it into one of our Bursaries for this year.

The Spirit Run has grown to be successful and recognized as a destination run for people of all ages and skill in the sea-to-sky corridor and beyond”, said Peter Diemer, President of the Whistler Spirit Run organizing committee. “I would also like to thank our selection committee for choosing such worthy recipients again this year, and we wish them continued success in their athletic pursuits and post-secondary education”.

2014 – RECIPIENTS OF THE FRANK REYNOLDS BURSARY

Lauren Doak – a long-time resident of Whistler is actively involved in many different sports has been running competitively since elementary school and has been competing at a provincial level. Since 2007, she’s been a member of the Whistler Nordics Ski Club and has grown from a novice athlete to a competitor and an award winner at a national level. She’s competed 4 times at The Whistler Spirit Run, and will be studying Kinesiology starting in the fall of 2014.

Lauren Fraser – was born in Vancouver and recently graduated from Kitsilano Secondary School in the French Immersion Program.  Beyond track & field she also participates in other sports including swimming and ultimate Frisbee and trained through her high school years with the Vancouver Thunderbirds Track & Field Club. She is an active volunteer in the community and this autumn will be attending the University of Victoria to pursue a Bachelor of Commerce Degree.

The 2014 Whistler Spirit Run is set for September 28th, 2014 at Whistler Olympic Park. The Whistler Spirit Run, part of the Vancouver Sun Run Series, is a Cross Country and Trail running event featuring something for everyone at Whistler Olympic Park. It is the realization of the late coach Frank Reynolds’ vision to have a mass participation cross country event while encouraging and supporting British Columbia High School and University athletes through charitable donations and scholarship programs.
